The Job

Volunteers have the option to complete their program at any of our IHF Education Centers located in Jakarta, Bali, and Medan. Our centers across Indonesia operate free and open classes for students ages 6 to 18, taught by local teachers in congruence with international volunteers. We strive to develop global leaders with cross cultural experiences through the teaching of core competencies in addition to offering leadership and life skills training. Each center will present the volunteer with unique challenges in terms of management of local volunteers, classroom management, and community engagement, in addition to being trained on the operational procedures required to oversee the successful management of an NGO.

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) has been active in Indonesia since 1984. Though each center has unique needs and challenges the primary goal of each is the same, to provide free supplementary education for children from economically underprivileged backgrounds. Volunteers who sign up to donate their time at one of our IHF Education Centers make a very real impact during their stay participating in any or all of the following local tasks:

  • Organize special games, activities, and workshops for the children

  • Submit weekly lesson plans, and lead informal English, math, & computer classes

  • Help improve our center by participating in small projects and repairs

  • Share your knowledge, skills and experience with the communities we serve through our community outreach projects

  • Support our local Indonesian teachers through both professional mentorship and social friendships cultivated

  • Train in the core components of an international organization (including management skills, policy and procedures, finance, fundraising, media & PR, donor relations, and recruitment)

  • Be responsible for the management, design and implementation of community led projects linked to your academic and or professional skills and experience

  • Manage local volunteers and shape their experience at our IHF Education Center

The program requires a minimum time commitment of 4 months, though we encourage volunteers to stay for up to 1 year or more.

In addition to making a notable difference in the lives of the children we serve, you will also have access to the following benefits:

  • Certificate of program completion

  • Letter of recommendation upon request

  • Acquire leadership and management capacities that will enable you to lead in the ever-changing global environment

  • Gain practical experience in an NGO environment

  • Interact with locals, experience a different culture, and build cultural awareness

  • Join a global network of IHF volunteers and alumni

The perfect candidate

IHF is looking for volunteers who can commit to a minimum of two weeks to our Legacy Program. Volunteers interested in this program have several options:

  1. You can volunteer for up to 4 hours each day helping out with any of the local tasks above. The rest of your time is free for you to explore the incredible surroundings of our centre.

  2. Add value to our NGO by volunteering for an additional 4 hours each day by working for one of our online teams, gaining practical experience in an NGO environment, certification on completion of your stay and a letter of recommendation upon request you could also get a discounted rate for your stay. This role requires volunteers agree to make additional commitments for the duration of their stay and will have less time for tourism and personal activities. It is best suited to volunteers interested in gaining practical experience working for an International NGO.

  3. Do you have any special skills or training which would be useful to the centre, the community or the people we support? Let our Volunteer Team know, we have adjustable rates for volunteers willing to run professional legacy projects.

Volunteers accepted to this program will have: confidence using the English language, deep empathy for impoverished children and their communities, and a commitment to our Core Values. Previous international travel and volunteer experiences are a plus.

Program Cost

Volunteers in our Legacy Volunteer Program pay a weekly fee of $200 USD. Accommodation and meals, prepared by a local member of staff, are included in this program. All program fees go towards supporting our centers, running our programs and caring for our children. You’ll have a fabulous tourism experience whilst ensuring your money is supporting a wonderful cause you’ll get to see with your own eyes.

Not included are your travel costs to and from your chosen Center, initial visa fees, immunizations, travel insurance, and any spending money you wish to bring with you.

Note: due to the nature of our work with children, should your application be accepted we do require a criminal background check which is less than 1 year old.

In addition to making a notable difference in the lives of children, you will have plenty of time to explore the natural beauty of Indonesia.

  • Make a difference in the lives of impoverished children

  • Enhance your CV with international experience
